Airsoft – FAQs

Do I need a licence to buy or own an airsoft gun?

No licence is required for an airsoft gun, as long as it stays within the legal power limit (see next question). This is unlike many other countries where airsoft guns require a licence to own.

Image alt

What power limit do airsoft guns need to comply with in Ireland?

Airsoft guns with a muzzle energy of 1 joule or less are not classified as firearms under Irish law. If a RIF exceeds 1 joule, it's treated as an unlicensed firearm — anything over that limit can't be used at skirmish sites and will be seized by customs if imported. Every gun we sell is built and tested to stay within this limit.

Can I carry or transport my airsoft gun in public?

No. Even though they're legal to own, RIFs must not be carried openly in public, must always be transported in a closed case or suitable bag, and must never be displayed where members of the public can see them. Penalties for breaching this can include a fine of up to €5,000, up to 5 years imprisonment, or both, so always keep your gun cased from your front door to the boot of your car.

What safety gear do I need to play airsoft?

ANSI or EN166-rated eye protection (full-seal goggles or a mesh/polycarbonate face mask) is essential — never play without it. Many sites also require lower-face protection for close-quarters games. Beyond the field's own rules, always make sure you have the landowner's permission to shoot and that you're shooting somewhere members of the public can't be put at risk.

Where am I allowed to actually use my airsoft gun?

You can't shoot in your back garden if it risks being seen by neighbours or passers-by, and you definitely can't use it in any public space. You need permission from the landowner to use it on private land, and you must be careful that BBs can't reach a public footpath or road. The simplest and safest option is to play at a licensed skirmish site — these sites are required to carry insurance and be authorised by the local Garda superintendent, so you're playing somewhere fully set up for it.
